Education
The children of Joplin are served by the schools of the Joplin School District. This incredibly strong district has an early childhood center, 13 elementary schools, three middle schools, a newly renovated state of the art high school, and a technical center. The district serves over 7,000 students, yet is small enough to provide a sense of community and serve its students with unique and diverse opportunities. Joplin Schools pride themselves by focusing on the three 'A's: Academics, Arts and Athletics. By providing students with opportunities to participate in all three fields, the administration and parents feel that students are able to receive a well-rounded education.
Joplin is also home to a wide variety of higher educational facilities. Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) is a four-year public instruction providing Bachelor's and Master's degrees in a variety of academic areas. Students looking to attend a private institution may attend nearby Ozark Christian College and Messenger College.
Attractions
Joplin is home to a unique array of attractions and festivals that occur year round. For history lovers, Joplin Memorial Hall is an ideal stop. This stunning memorial pays homage to the brave men and women who have fought in the Armed Services. The Hall also serves as an entertainment venue in Joplin and has held a variety of events such as circuses, formal auctions, premier entertainers and family-centered arts performances. The venue is able to seat up to 2,700 and has a floor big enough to hold two full-sized basketball courts! Some previous events have included a Community Christmas Pageant, The Moscow Ballet, the MSSU Jazz Orchestra and various plays and musicals.
As Joplin does experience all four seasons, the town's events and festivals do tend to change according to the season. In the summer, Joplin residents and visitors flock to Landreth Park Amphitheatre for the Music in the Park series. The series changes every week and features many genres of music—making it perfect for a family outing or a gathering of friends. In the fall, residents enjoy the vast array of Halloween festivities such as the Old Fashioned Hayride and Campout at McClelland Park. Residents enjoy a cool ride around the park in the brisk fall air, followed by roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate around a luscious campfire. The annual Halloween Spooktacular features a costume contest, candy, witches stew, and often a special musical guest.
Joplin is also home to the Joplin Museum Complex. This fantastic complex is home to two phenomenal educational facilities: The Everett J. Ritchie Tri-State Mineral Museum and The Dorothea B. Hoover Historical Museum. The Mineral Museum boasts some of the world's most unique and treasured zinc ore and lead dating back to the late 1800s. The Museum is a highly respectable institution among some of the world's best geologists and is also regarded for its display of historical mining tools and mining artifacts. The Dorothea B. Hoover Museum takes you on a historical journey through Joplin, documenting the tale of how Joplin became the grand city that it is today. Some of the most popular exhibits include one on Bonnie and Clyde, Route 66 and the famous Spook Light.
